The decline in support for music education in our public school systems.

The decline in support for music education in our public school systems.

In and around Portland Maine, we have seen a lack of interest in funding the arts.  One of the worst offenses that I have notices is having to make a choice between "Physical Education" and "Music Education".  As both are important in the development of students creative minds and physical training, both should be core curriculum.   One organization that has been battling this crisis for decades on a national level is "Music in Schools Today" http://mustcreate.org/index.html  As other local communities have started organizations to petition for more funding for the arts, I have yet to see one for our area.  I would like to see this for our area, your feed back would be appreciated.

  1. Musical practice and understanding, builds logical links and patterns in a child brain, as well as a intelectual and physical discipline that is hard to duplicate in any other field. Even if the child is not to become a musical prodigy, the training still helps them in their development into any field they will choose.

It has long been clear that those 'bean counters' closing down musical education programs, either have never benefited from musical practice, or have little understanding of how brains develop and create the networks of connections that we consider logical thought patterns. Sad for them, but more sad for the children of the future, and their potentials.

This leaves the parents to find competent and open minded music teachers to bring their child along in the direction that best suits their likes and abilities. Worth every penny and hour behind the wheel to do this for your child.

  2. Indeed, I hope we can spread the word that this is not tolerable. I hope we can find more people who are concerned with this issue.
